Questions Are Part of the Process
You don’t need to know exactly what service to book or all the salon terminology before you come in.
Maybe you know you want to go lighter but aren’t sure whether that means balayage or highlights.
Maybe your roots need attention, you’re thinking about covering gray, or you want a completely different color.
Or maybe you just want to know how to keep your hair looking better between appointments.
Start here.
And if you still aren’t sure, that’s what the consultation is for.

Getting started
Booking & Your First Visit
I’m not sure what service to book. What should I do?
Start with the result you want, not the salon terminology.
If you’re deciding between services, planning a major color change, have previous color on your hair or simply aren’t sure how much appointment time you need, begin with a consultation.
We can look at your hair, talk through your goals and determine the best path forward.
Do I need a consultation?
Not for every appointment.
If you already know the service you need and are maintaining an established look, you may be able to book that service directly.
A consultation is especially helpful for major color changes, color correction, new balayage or blonding goals, or whenever your color history makes the right service unclear.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring inspiration photos if you have them.
Photos are useful because they show us what you mean by words like “bright,” “natural,” “warm,” “cool” or “dimensional.”
It also helps to show examples of what you don’t want.
We’ll use the photos as direction rather than trying to copy another person’s hair exactly.
Should I tell you about previous hair color?
Yes.
Previous permanent color, highlights, bleach, box color, henna and other chemical services can affect what is safely achievable.
Color history matters even when you can no longer see all of it.
Can I get my haircut and color during the same appointment?
Often, yes.
Gray’s offers appointments that combine color and haircut services when appropriate.
Choose the booking option that matches the color service you need, or start with a consultation if you aren’t sure which combination to select.
Color questions
Balayage, Highlights & Hair Color
What’s the difference between balayage and highlights?
Both can create brightness and dimension.
Balayage generally focuses on softer blending and a more lived-in transition as the hair grows.
Traditional highlights can create more consistent brightness closer to the root.
Sometimes the best result uses more than one technique.
You don’t need to choose based only on the name — the finished look you want is more important.
Is balayage low maintenance?
It can be.
Because balayage can be designed to blend more softly with your natural root, the grow-out may feel less obvious than a brighter root-to-end highlight.
But maintenance depends on how blonde or dimensional you want to stay, your natural color and the tone you prefer.
Can brunettes get balayage?
Absolutely.
Balayage does not have to mean blonde.
Strategic lighter pieces can create caramel, warm brunette, neutral or brighter dimension while keeping the overall result brunette.
Can balayage make me very blonde?
It can create significant brightness, but how light your hair can safely become depends on your starting color, previous color and current condition.
Some transformations may require more than one appointment.
How often should I refresh my highlights?
There isn’t one schedule for everyone.
How quickly you want to return depends on how close the highlights are to your root, how bright you like your color and how comfortable you are with the grow-out.
Softer dimensional looks may allow more time between larger appointments.
Why does my hair color fade?
Color naturally changes over time.
How quickly it fades can be affected by hair porosity, washing frequency, water temperature, heat styling, sun exposure and the products you use.
Using products intended for color-treated hair and limiting unnecessary heat can help maintain your tone longer.
Cut & shape
Haircut Questions
How often should I get a haircut?
It depends on the haircut and what you want to maintain.
Shorter or highly shaped cuts usually need attention sooner.
Longer styles may go longer between appointments, especially when the goal is maintaining length.
If the ends are splitting, the shape has disappeared or your hair has become noticeably harder to style, it may be time.
Will trimming my hair make it grow faster?
A haircut doesn’t change the rate at which hair grows from the scalp.
Regular trims can, however, remove damaged or splitting ends before breakage travels farther up the hair.
That can help you retain healthier-looking length over time.
Why does it feel like my hair isn’t growing?
Hair can be growing at the scalp while breakage at the ends makes the overall length appear unchanged.
Heat, chemical services, mechanical damage and split ends can all contribute.
If you’re concerned about unusual hair loss or changes in growth, that’s something to discuss with an appropriate healthcare professional.
Color maintenance
Gray Coverage & Root Touch-Ups
Can you cover gray hair?
Yes.
Depending on the result you want, we can discuss fuller gray coverage or a softer approach that blends gray into dimensional color.
The right option depends on your natural color, amount of gray and how you want the color to grow out.
What is gray blending?
Instead of trying to completely hide every gray hair, gray blending uses color and dimension to soften the contrast between gray and the rest of your hair.
For some clients, this can create a more gradual-looking grow-out than full coverage.
How often will I need a root touch-up?
That depends on how quickly your hair grows, how much contrast there is between your natural root and color, and how much regrowth you’re comfortable seeing.
Rather than using one schedule for everyone, we can recommend maintenance based on your actual color.
Major color changes
Color Correction & Previous Color
What is color correction?
Color correction addresses color that needs more than a standard refresh.
That can include unwanted tone, uneven color, banding, overly dark color, previous home color or a significant change from your current shade.
The process depends heavily on what is already in the hair.
Can color correction be completed in one appointment?
Sometimes.
But major corrections may require multiple appointments.
Your color history, current condition and desired result determine how much can safely be accomplished at one time.
We would rather give you a realistic plan than promise a result your hair cannot safely handle.
I used box color. Can I still go lighter?
Possibly, but previous permanent color can affect how the hair lifts.
Be completely open about your color history during the consultation.
That information helps us determine what is realistic and how to approach the change safely.

Taking Care of Your Hair at Home
Why does my hair feel dry?
Dryness can come from several things, including heat styling, chemical services, environmental exposure and a hair-care routine that isn’t providing enough conditioning.
Start with a shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair and use heat protection when styling.
If dryness or scalp changes are persistent or unusual, seek appropriate medical advice rather than assuming they are only cosmetic.
Why does my hair get greasy so quickly?
Oil production varies from person to person.
Product buildup, your cleansing routine and the products you use can also affect how quickly the scalp and hair feel oily.
The goal isn’t to remove every trace of natural oil — it’s to find a cleansing routine that works for your scalp and hair.
What are sulfates?
Sulfates are cleansing ingredients used in many shampoos.
They help remove oil and buildup and create the lather many people associate with shampoo.
Whether a sulfate-containing or sulfate-free shampoo is appropriate depends on your hair, scalp and color needs.
How can I protect my hair from heat damage?
Use a heat protectant, avoid repeatedly passing hot tools over the same section and use only as much heat as your hair needs.
Fine, lightened, chemically treated or damaged hair generally needs more conservative heat than coarse, healthy hair.
What temperature should I use on my flat iron or curling iron?
There isn’t one perfect temperature for everyone.
Start lower and increase only if needed.
Fine, lightened, chemically treated or compromised hair should generally be styled more conservatively than healthy, coarse hair.
The goal is to use the lowest effective temperature rather than automatically turning the tool to its maximum setting.
